Signs of a worn clutch

The clutch transmits the engine’s rotation to the gearbox. It wears with use, more so in city driving and when carrying loads or towing. Typical symptoms are:

  • The engine revs rise but the car does not accelerate accordingly (the clutch slips).
  • The pedal bites very high or gears are hard to engage.
  • Judder or jerking when pulling away.
  • Noise when pressing or releasing the pedal, which may come from the release bearing.

What a clutch kit includes

Usually the clutch disc, the pressure plate and the release bearing, mechanical or hydraulic depending on the car. If your car has a dual-mass flywheel, check it when replacing the clutch: a worn flywheel causes vibration and knocking when pulling away. See our dual-mass and solid flywheels and clutch kits with flywheel.

How to choose the right kit

The clutch depends on the engine and the gearbox: compare the original (OE) number with the equivalents on each product page or send us your VIN and we will confirm the kit.

Frequently asked questions

Should the release bearing be replaced with the clutch?

Yes, it is recommended: the gearbox has to come off to reach the clutch, and the release bearing has the same service life.

How long does a clutch last?

It depends a lot on use: city driving, hill starts and carrying loads wear it out sooner.
