His approval rating has fallen from 73% in June 2013 to 35% today, according to a survey by The Associated Press and the Washington Post.
  
  Since his election, Ghani's popularity has plummeted and he has only a 17% support rating according to the poll. Ghani's political rivals have accused him of having a corrupt track record, and the ruling United Progressive Alliance is considering a second bid.
  
  As a country in turmoil, Afghanistan's political leaders are forced to contend with what they see as a growing threat to democracy and a shrinking economy. One of the world's poorest countries, the country continues to face Taliban attacks, and the international community is struggling to resolve the civil war there, which is expected to extend for years.
  
  The current president admitted that he broke ethics rules when he donated the help of a few of his aides to the Afghan Taliban at the height of his popularity and power, but the New York Times said he could be forced to resign.
  
  He also allegedly accepted foreign military aid during his tenure as the leader of Afghanistan. When the US military began withdrawing in late 2012, it ordered an investigation to look into whether US officials who served in the country should have been disqualified from office, the New York Times said, adding that the US did not find any wrongdoing.
